Sooners Pull Away Late

Oklahoma’s strong second half propelled the Sooners to a 67-57 victory over West Virginia Saturday afternoon in Big 12 Conference basketball action at the WVU Coliseum.

It was the league opener for both teams, although Oklahoma defeated West Virginia, 77-70, in Orlando during Thanksgiving break and will go for the regular season trifecta in Norman on March 6.

“We had shots around the rim and don’t make them,” said West Virginia coach Bob Huggins. “They get shots around the rim and they make them.”

Wasn’t it Mark Twain who once famously said, “Lies, damned lies and statistics?” Well, after scouring last Saturday’s Pinstripe Bowl stat sheet, and then reading the corrected version that came out yesterday, I have a feeling old Mark may have been on to something.

WVU football sports information director Mike Montoro noticed “several discrepancies” following West Virginia’s 38-14 loss to Syracuse and sat down with assistant athletic director Michael Fragale on Monday morning at the Milan Puskar Center to go through the game tape and re-score it. Their quick review ended up taking four hours.
