With Pat Kirkland now coaching the tight ends/fullbacks for the 2010 Konica Minolta Gator Bowl, it’s almost as if Bill Stewart is going to his bullpen and bringing out his closer.
Kirkland has been through this before – and under much more difficult circumstances. When Rich Rodriguez left for Michigan and took secondary coach Tony Gibson with him two weeks after the 2007 regular season loss to Pitt, it was Kirkland who filled in and coached the cornerbacks in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl against third-ranked Oklahoma.
It was a time of great uncertainty and torn allegiances. Some of the West Virginia coaches were moving on to Michigan while others were not certain if they were even going to have jobs the morning after the bowl game. Pat Kirkland was one of the uncertain ones.
