There’s a fine line between celebrating and bragging.
West Virginia University earned the right to celebrate the remarkable 70-33 victory over Clemson in the 2012 Orange Bowl. It was an historic performance, one that provided WVU with a remarkable amount of positive publicity.
But WVU has made a poor decision to extend the celebration to include two billboards along interstate highways outside of Morgantown. The billboards have a giant “70” on them (the “0 is an orange), the text “It’s not just our speed limit” and the 70-33 score.

Disagree Hoppy, Taking the high road all the time gets old. After watching the so called pre game show which featured a guided tour of Dabo’s house and his kids bedroom set I say pour it on. I once lived near Clemson and UGA, do you think those universities or the populace has or shows any respect for WVU and the people of the state. I can tell you first hand they do not, at least not until they got beat on the playing field and took notice. Its not like people from South Carolina are driving through WV on their daily commute to see them.
It also does not say anythign negative about Clemson. Fact is we did score 70 points. I am all for it.
to me, the sign would have a completely different connotation if it had left the 70-33 score off. there would be no immediate connection to Clemson’s (33) but just to the celebration that we scored 70.
I know – a fine line (who did we scroe 70 on?), but like you said, we are not posting these billboards in South Carolina.
Also, what if it had been a national championship? would it be bad sportsmanship to put up signs celebrating that achilevement? (but we might make the other team feel bad! – hello?) if the signs simply said “2012 Orange Bowl champions” would that be different. That “70″ is a record and worth puffing our chests out over. Again, wish it didn’t have the score – we’d still get it.

Completely agree. It’s celebrating a record. That it came at Clemson’s expense and they happen to wear orange is just a coincidence. They could have even mentioned all the other bowl records that were set and it still wouldn’t have anything to do with Clemson. And it isn’t so wrong to show the score. It isn’t wrong to put the advertisement in context. They certainly held back and showed sensitivity. They easily could have shown the score as:
WVU 70
Clemson 33
Get real Hoppy! How much respect have we been shown before or after any of our BCS wins? NONE!!! It’s not like they only had 7 points. If the tables would have been turned and Clemson put a billboard up it would be celebrated in the south. If we would’ve lost you would be pissing and moaning about that too. I hear they have houses for sale in SC why don’t you move there. I just wish Cook would’ve knocked Herbstreit down and left Obie alone.
I agree with smeer. This comes across as the snot nosed kid on the playground who won his first game of kickball. This is not a TCU alum responding to an insult. This is the “Flagship” and when fans whine about getting no respect from other conferences, networks or other people in the state who like green you need not look beyond that billboard. No disrespect to Churchill but I prefer football terms…
ACT LIKE YA BEEN THERE!!!
