Chalk it up to just one more cultural difference in the Big East and the Big 12.

From a basketball standpoint, West Virginia’s 71-50 home win over TCU on Jan. 23 was easier than cow-tipping, but Saturday’s return game suddenly looks more difficult after the Horned Frogs ambushed Kansas. It was an upset that RPI guru Jerry Palm labeled “the biggest upset in the 20 years I’ve been tracking numbers.”

Shelton Gibson out of Cleveland Heights High School in Ohio was one of West Virginia’s higher profile signees in its 2013 recruiting class. The four-star wide receiver plenty of other impressive offers besides West Virginia, including Ohio State and Tennessee.

“At the end of the day, he saw a great coaching staff, he saw a chance to maybe get on the field a little bit sooner and he loves the system that West Virginia runs,” said Gibson’s high school head coach Jeff Rotsky. “I think it just felt right to him. We talked often about what he liked most and where he felt he was best off, and the plus-points kept coming back to West Virginia. I think it’s a great decision for him.”

WVU regains recruiting swagger

West Virginia couldn’t land receiver Tyler Boyd, and junior college quarterback Tanner McEvoy chose Wisconsin, but the Mountaineers’ coaching staff left National Signing Day with plenty of smiles after reeling in the school’s highest-ranked class since 2007.

Dana Holgorsen brought in playmaking replacements to keep his Air Raid offense soaring, along with 11 defensive signees expected to help WVU stop other teams’ playmakers for a change.
