The last two times West Virginia was able to put together victories, Notre Dame was the next team on the schedule.
Both times, any sort of momentum or confidence the Mountaineers had built up in the previous outing was dashed as WVU fell back to the ground with a loud thud.
After scoring just 16 points in the first half of the loss earlier this month, Bob Huggins’ team came out and matched that poor effort in the final 20 minutes on Wednesday.
Notre Dame shot 61 percent against the Mountaineers, the best a team has done against West Virginia since Huggins took over. It wasn’t as though the Irish just made every shot they took despite tough defense. There was no defense.

Jabarie Hinds = Truck Bryant Jr? clearly rattled by the crowd chatning “airball” so shows them by taking and missing a mix of awful shots or penetration into traffic where “victory” was having the ball hit the backboard. Why did Huggs not sit him? oh because the kid from WV stood around waving for the ball on the three point line, then throwing up bricks or forgetting that “you have to get the ball not wait for it to come to you” resulting in numerous highlight clips for ESPN.
And speaking of ESPN, Digger Phelps? really? I hate ND only slightly less than Pitt.
I wouldn’t necessarily point all the blame at Truck, nor Jabarie Hinds to that matter. Our first half production was much better than the first half in Morgantown. I would agree that the Irish pricks (excuse me did I use profanity) did mess with our psyche in the second. It also didn’t help that they were stellar behind the arc and to boot, we “couldn’t hit the water from a sinking boat” if we tried. This team is not as mentally tough as I thought it was, but I wouldn’t necessarily count us out yet. We HAVE played an extremely difficult schedule with a lot of inexperienced players (referring to the freshman). Our season could turn around very quickly with a win on Friday.
yeah – said in the heat of the moment, but I couldn’t believe Hinds was allowed to improv especially with nothing to show for it.
And Truck – just watching him brick free throws in the second half made the bile rise. It is simply inexcusable. Truck is a senior and what he modeled for the frosh is telling. Poor KJ who gave us one more year.
It is a mental game. Pitt’s psyche was even lower than ours. three more with a chance to right the ship at home. but i really think the key will be how we play in MSG during the tourney. we belly flopped there versus St. John’s – a team that played all freshman! and this team needs some mental moxie on the road. MSG used to be very good for us.
also wondering why Huggs can’t/won’t recruit any pure shooters/ballers. There are no more Beilein recruits left in the cupboard. Look what ND did to us with smart ball players. Usually a Huggs team will make up for lack of pure skills with defensive tenacity and hustle. This team gave up in the second half. Just threw in the towel and just as disturbing, stopped competing when they knew there was no chance to win.
Unless there is some magic wand, a game that just flips the switch for this team, I don’t see them making much noise. and that is a shame for KJ. To be the first BE player to lead in both scoring and rebounding and not win BE POY.
Gary Browne is a bright spot and amazingly an after thought in recruiting. This might have been a very different team if Pepper had stuck around. still scratching my head on that one.
easy smeer. It’s not like Jabarie has a bunch of people around him to help him grow as a point guard. Huggins offense has been terrible forever and there isn’t a quality experienced point guard to mentor him. Others have had the wisdom of players like Collins, Nichols, and Mazulla to help them grow into the position. Hinds has nobody. Besides, what did you expect from this year playing all these freshman and Truck. Remember this day that you criticize Jabarie as a freshman and mark my words that he’ll be a POY candidate in the Big 12 in the years to come.
Just disappointed in his play this game. He got rattled by the students and decided to show them by playing NYC ball. I know he’s only a frosh. Still wonder why huggs didn’t bench him. GB is a much better more natural point guard who got praise from Dixon the last game. If your gonna lose clear the bench and see who wants to play. Hinds was uncharecteristically bad. Looked just like truck as a frosh. Here’s hoping he progresses more than truck, by the way don’t we have a pretty good transfer PG for hinds to learn from? I,m not angry, just perplexed.

It would appear that had all those Freshman performed like Freshman early in the season, we would not be criticizing them at this point. Coach Huggins brought them to an unusual level. They did so well that we are now disappointed that it did not continue. Que sera.
