The Virginia women’s basketball team’s late rally came up short with No. 25 West Virginia holding on for a 54-47 victory.
The Cavaliers (5-2) led 26-23 at the break, but the Mountaineers (4-2) started the second half on an 11-0 run. After trailing by 13 points midway through the second period, Virginia narrowed the gap to three points, 48-45, with 3:12 left in the game. West Virginia hit a three-pointer with just over two minutes left to push the lead back out to six, 51-45 and held on for the victory.
The game was a battle of defenses with West Virginia shooting just 35.6 percent (21-of-59) in the game while the Cavaliers converted 25.9 percent (15-of-58) of their shots.
